And now admonition brought to you by the Collierville Church of Christ.

What does it mean to usurp the authority of God? It means that when God has made a choice, or God has given a commandment, or God has told us what to do, and then we replace His commandment with our own decisions, we’ve usurped His authority.

Abner does this in Second Samuel chapter two, where Samuel in the past has already anointed David at the command of God. David is to be the next king in Israel. And when Saul dies, Abner anoints someone else instead.

In second Samuel chaptertwo and in verseeight, But Abner, the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s Army, tookIshbosheth, the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim and made him king over Gilead.

Abner chooses a different king, which he had no authority to do. He usurped the authority of God.
