A Failure to Correct (1 Kings 1:5-6) (Article)

The life of David, the king of Israel, was often filled with difficulty — the affairs of state, the continual wars and unrest and threats against his kingdom.  To further complicate the matter, David had a weakness for women and would, in turn, father many children. Still, they would not receive adequate attention from their father because of the previously mentioned difficulties.

As a result, there will not always be a good relationship between David and his sons.  Surrounding David were many power-hungry advisors and political leaders that would influence his sons in the wrong direction (cf. Jonadab – 2 Samuel 13:4; Ahithophel – 2 Samuel 15:12).

Amid all these struggles, what can often happen in the life of a family is that one child begins to do wrong, and no one corrects it.  According to 1 Kings 1:5-6, this is precisely what happened with Adonijah, the brother of Absalom.                                                                        

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king”; and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.  (And his father had not rebuked him at any time by saying, “Why have you done so?” He was also very good-looking. His mother had borne him after Absalom.)

1 Kings 1:5-6

Solomon, a son of David who would observe his brothers’ attempts to overthrow David, would write this wisdom to his son: “Chasten your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction” (Proverbs 19:18). There is importance in expeditiously handling wrongdoing.  The correction postponed can become an encouragement to further bad behavior instead of being a deterrent.  There comes a time when it is too late to hope for turning a child from wickedness.  They have plotted their course into iniquity and its untimely end.  Adonijah would ultimately reach the end of his life at the order of his brother, Solomon when seeking to usurp the throne once more.

Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, “May God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life! “Now therefore, as the LORD lives, who has confirmed me and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has established a house for me, as He promised, Adonijah shall be put to death today!” So King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he struck him down, and he died.

Parents and Grandparents, correct your children and grandchildren before it is too late – while there is still hope – before sin overthrows the good in their life and brings its ultimate conclusion… death (Romans 6:23).

When you become a Christian, what things were supposed to change in your life? We’ve read already that we’re supposed to put away lying. But Paul says something else. Ephesians, Chapter four, Verse 26 he says. 

Be angry and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath nor give place to the devil. 

When you allow anger to grab hold of your life, when you allow anger to control you, you open up a target for Satan. Control yourself. Learn to exhibit the mind of Christ in your life.

Begin today. Control your anger.

Putting Away – Admonition 252

Eph 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.

If you’ve put Christ on in baptism if you have become a Christian, (those two things are synonymous) what things aren’t you supposed to do anymore? What things are you supposed to have taken out of your life?

Take lying and remove it from your life. Speak the truth and speak it in love. 

Paul says in Ephesians, Chapter four, Verse 25. Putting away lying. Let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.

Did You Begin A New Life? – Admonition 251

Eph 4:23-24  – and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,  and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

What changes are supposed to happen when you become a Christian? 

One of them is, your mind is supposed to change because the person living inside of you is supposed to change. Ephesians, Chapter four, Verse 23 says, “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind. And that you put on the new man which was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness.”

When a person is baptized into Christ, when they are immersed in water, they die and they are resurrected again to a new life. They come up out of that water, a new person and they’re supposed to change. They’re supposed to live differently.

When you were baptized, did you come out and begin living a new life? Where did you go back to the old one — think about that today.

As The Truth Is In Jesus – Admonition 250

What does it mean to learn Christ? Because Paul says that we are to learn Christ? Ephesians four, Verse 20.

He then says that we’re to be taught by him. Ephesians, Chapter four, Verse 21. But why? Because the truth is in Him. 

Jesus said to his disciples in John. Chapter 17 for 17 is he’s praying to the father. “Sanctify them by thy truth (God’s truth) Your word (God’s word) is truth.” Are you allowing God’s word to change your life today?

How to Avoid Anger

We mentioned in the past something that’s really hard, especially for some people. And that’s controlling their anger.

Sometimes we just fly off the handle. Sometimes we lose our temper. Sometimes we’re quick tempered, and those are the qualities of a Christian.

So what can we do to avoid anger? Number one, Paul says in Ephesians Chapter four, Verse 26.

Do not let the sun go down on your wrath. Anger builds upon anger from the past. When we deal with the situations of today, while it is still today, we don’t have to relive them tomorrow.

Deal with your anger today and live the life of a Christian.
